Tradition vs Modernity: A Kusudama Art Exhibition

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to showcase my Kusudama origami art installation at A DAY 一日商号 in Fahrenheit 88, Kuala Lumpur. The exhibition, which ran from January 19th to February 2nd, 2025, was a beautiful journey into the balance between tradition and modernity, and I’m so thankful to everyone who visited and experienced it.

The centerpiece of the installation featured a bamboo structure adorned with red ropes and delicate Kusudama origami pieces, symbolizing the strength of familial bonds and the unity of tradition. Surrounding it were eight large Kusudama pieces. The colors I have used in the kusudamas are in warm tones like red, orange, yellow, and gold, celebrating the joy and prosperity that our cultural heritage brings.

But what made this exhibition truly special was the introduction of modern elements through the use of black, white, and purple Kusudama pieces. These contrasting colors highlighted the coexistence of modernity with tradition, inviting viewers to reflect on how both can live in harmony without discord.

The installation was a reminder of the importance of balance—how we can honor our traditions while embracing the change and individuality of modern life. I hope it inspired you to reflect on how we navigate relationships, family dynamics, and our cultural identities.

A big thank you to A DAY 一日商号 for the incredible opportunity to share this work. I’m so grateful to all who came by to explore the exhibition, and I look forward to future opportunities to create and share art that celebrates both continuity and change.
